# Essential Doge's Palace Highlights

## Porta della Carta

Your entry begins at this 15th-century ceremonial gateway. It connects the palace to St. Mark's Basilica and serves as a prime example of Venetian Gothic architecture. Look for the sculpture of Doge Francesco Foscari kneeling before the Lion of Saint Mark. This entrance represents the former political power of the Republic. Access is included with all standard entry tickets. You will pass through this area as you transition from the square into the main courtyard to start your self-guided or guided tour.

## Scala dei Giganti

Located in the internal courtyard, these massive stairs were the site of Ducal coronations. The landing is flanked by two colossal statues of Mars and Neptune, symbolizing Venice's power over land and sea. While visitors no longer walk up these specific stairs for security reasons, they are a primary photographic landmark on the standard visitor route. Standard entry tickets provide full views of the staircase from the courtyard level, allowing you to see where new Doges were once sworn into office.

## Scala d'Oro

The Golden Staircase served as the formal entrance to the private and government offices. Its name comes from the white and 24-karat gold leaf stucco work on the ceiling. This 16th-century masterpiece was designed to impress visiting dignitaries as they ascended to the heart of the Venetian government. You will walk up these stairs as part of the standard ticket route. It marks the transition from the public areas of the palace to the high-security council chambers and the Doge’s private apartments.

## Sala del Maggior Consiglio

This is the largest and most impressive room in the palace. It hosted the Great Council, the main political body of the Republic. You will see Tintoretto’s 'Paradiso' here, which remains one of the largest oil paintings ever created. The sheer scale of the room, built without internal support columns, was an engineering marvel of its time. Access to this hall is the focal point of every standard entry ticket. It is the final major stop before you head toward the Bridge of Sighs.

## Sala dello Scrutinio and Sala del Collegio

These administrative halls are where the actual work of governing Venice took place. The Sala del Collegio features a magnificent ceiling by Paolo Veronese, depicting the power and virtues of the Republic. The Sala dello Scrutinio was used for the counting of votes during the election of the Doge. Both rooms are heavily decorated with historical paintings and ornate woodwork. These chambers are included in the standard admission price and offer a direct look at the bureaucratic machinery of the Venetian state.

## Bridge of Sighs and New Prisons

Cross the famous enclosed bridge that connects the palace to the Prigioni Nuove. You can look through the stone grates just as prisoners did centuries ago. Once inside the New Prisons, you will explore the stark contrast between the palace’s gold leaf and the cold stone cells. A standard entry ticket allows you to walk across the bridge and explore the main prison blocks. This section of the tour provides a complete view of how the Venetian judicial system functioned during the Republic.

## The Armoury and Casanova's Cell

The Armoury holds over 2,000 pieces of weaponry, including crossbows, suits of armor, and early firearms. This is part of the standard ticket. However, to see the 'Piombi' (Lead Chambers) and the specific cell where Giacomo Casanova was held before his famous escape, you must book the 'Secret Itineraries' tour. The standard ticket does not include the attic prisons or the hidden administrative rooms. Choose the Secret Itineraries ticket if you want to access these restricted areas located above the main council halls.
